Laying the foundations for change

With major enablement plans in place for the future, WEL Networks decided to undertake a major digital transformation project, including adopting a robust and future-proof integration platform.

“Our vision was to have an integration platform which would enable us to transform how we delivered our services,” says Dilan Prasad, Technology Platforms Manager at WEL Networks. “Due to our requirements, we decided on a hybrid approach with MuleSoft as the integration platform, Solace for event-driven integration, and OpenShift to host applications that connect with on-premises solutions like GIS and Pi.”

After a competitive RFP process, WEL Networks chose Adaptiv as its integration partner. Adaptiv supplied expert MuleSoft and Solace specialists and partnered with the WEL Networks’ project team to set up integration foundations, support governance, and assist throughout delivery. Deliverables included productionising MuleSoft and Solace, creating and providing early-life support for a range of integration designs, and helping to upskill WEL Networks’ internal development and DevOps teams.

Integration in action

For over 10 years, WEL Networks had relied on a highly manual process to assess customer applications for home solar and battery connections. A successful application enabled customers to generate, use and export any surplus clean energy – but reviewing and approving those applications could take weeks.

“The process required customers to complete a detailed application form, which collected around 50 fields of data. Ironically, we already had most of the data we needed, but it was spread across multiple locations in the business, and it was a struggle to access it,” says Craig Marshall, Project Lead (WEL Networks).

“Once the form was submitted, we’d check that the customer’s equipment was approved for use, and that there was sufficient capacity in the electricity network to accommodate the energy they’re looking to inject. The entire process was extremely manual – we relied on emails and a large spreadsheet that had been around for about 10 years to gather the information we needed.

“There was no traceability, and customer interactions were pretty much minimal – they got two or three manual emails as part of the process, and that was about it. We certainly knew we could do better – and that we could leverage our new integration layer to good effect!”

The outcome: The DG Automation Project

WEL Networks’ integration platform project presented the perfect opportunity to deliver a New Zealand first – a fully automated approval system for home solar and battery connections that went live in October 2025.

The DG Automation system brings together a range of solutions, including HubSpot CRM, customer and installer portals, a self-service smart online form (with just eight data fields), and Xero. The platform connects directly to WEL’s smart-meter network, GIS data, and the Electricity Authority Registry database to calculate available capacity in real time. Any application that appears to need a technical review is automatically flagged for an engineering assessment.

The new digital platform instantly checks local network capacity and automatically approves most residential-sized systems up to 10 kW. Built on MuleSoft‘s API-Led integration architecture and Solace‘s event-driven integration, the solution supports a hands-free assessment and approval workflow in as little as five minutes.

Its strong performance in the first three weeks prompted an expansion of the auto-approval capability and the removal of application fees for 10–30 kW three-phase installations – another industry first.

Additionally, WEL Networks’ new system enables both customers and accredited installers to track the progress of the connection and manage their documentation from one simple dashboard. And as an acknowledgement of savings made in the approval process, WEL Networks has scrapped application fees for those with smaller systems.

Underpinned by the DG Automation system, WEL Networks have successfully launched their ‘Distribution Generation Export Check’ calculator, live on their website as of December 2025. As an additional outcome of the project, this tool gives customers a point-in-time view of distributed generation export capacity in seconds. The DG integration project provides WEL with a foundation to deliver ongoing improvements and new customer-facing capabilities, like this tool, more quickly over time.

For Prasad, the integration platform unlocks a wealth of immediate and long-term possibilities and benefits for the business. “DG Automation is an example of a great project with a strong use case – it clearly illustrates the business value of our integration platform and provides confidence in the ROI and potential of the investment.”
