Building Trusted Master Data

Poor data quality creates duplicate, inconsistent, and unreliable information across business systems, making it difficult for organisations to trust reporting, automate processes, deliver great customer experiences, and make informed business decisions.

While integration platforms like Microsoft Azure, Boomi and MuleSoft, help move data between applications, integration alone does not solve data quality or data consistency challenges. Without a clear system of record, critical business data can quickly become fragmented across multiple systems.
Master Data Management (MDM) addresses this challenge by creating a single source of truth for core business data, including customer, supplier, product, and employee records.

By centralising and governing master data, organisations can ensure that critical information remains accurate, complete, and consistent across their technology landscape.
A well-designed Master Data Management strategy improves data quality, strengthens data governance, reduces duplication, and increases confidence in reporting and analytics. This can be achieved through Boomi’s Data hub, Microsoft Purview, Databrick’s unified lakehouse approach or MuleSoft’s partnership with Stibo systems. The result with implementing an MDM strategy is trusted business data that enables faster decision-making, operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, and scalable business growth.

FAQ's

What is Master Data and Master Data Management?

Master Data Management (MDM) is the process of creating, managing, governing, and maintaining a single, trusted version of critical business data across an organisation. Master data can typically include customer, supplier, product, employee, and asset information.

By consolidating data from multiple systems into a single source of truth, MDM improves data quality, consistency, and accuracy, helping organisations make better business decisions and operate more efficiently.

Master Data Management helps organisations improve data accuracy, reduce duplication, strengthen compliance, and accelerate decision-making by providing trusted data across the business.

For example, if a customer’s contact details are updated in a CRM but not in a finance system, billing delays or communication issues can occur. With an MDM solution in place, data changes are synchronised and governed through agreed business rules, ensuring all systems work from the same trusted record.

Poor data management can create significant operational, financial, and compliance risks for organisations.

When business teams rely on inconsistent, duplicated, or disconnected data, it can lead to reporting errors, delayed billing, inaccurate forecasting, poor customer experiences, and inefficient business processes. These challenges are often amplified when data is spread across multiple systems without clear ownership or governance.

Without effective Master Data Management, organisations may struggle to trust their data and make informed business decisions.

The best way to start a Master Data Management initiative is by focusing on a single high-value business use case and then scaling the approach across the organisation.

At Adaptiv, we work with stakeholders to identify the master data entity causing the greatest business friction, whether that’s customer, supplier, employee, or product data. We then map the systems and workflows involved, including where the data is created, updated, consumed, and reported.

From there, we establish data governance, define ownership and business rules, identify the system of record, and implement the most appropriate MDM solution. Depending on your architecture and business requirements, this may be through Boomi’s Data Hub, Databricks’s unified lakehouse approach or MuleSoft’s partnership with Stibo Systems.

Once a proven framework is established, it can be extended to additional master data domains, creating a scalable foundation for trusted enterprise data.
