Lotto NZ rolls out ‘once-in-a-generation’ system upgrade

Customer Overview

Since 1987, Lotto New Zealand has provided safe gaming, such as Lotto, Powerball, and Instant Kiwi, to New Zealanders through a nationwide chain of retailers while contributing its profits back to thousands of New Zealand communities and causes.

Taking a scientific approach to the customer experience

To improve its customers’ online and in-store experience, Lotto NZ made a carefully considered decision to roll out a major ‘once-in-a-generation’ replacement of its gaming systems with a new core platform from Scientific Games, chosen for its international strength and innovative capabilities.

Key aspects of this rollout, known as “EDGE”, included connecting existing Lotto NZ interfaces, such as the My Lotto app, to Scientific Games’ backend via MuleSoft, and deploying a new Azure solution to enable real-time event streaming from Scientific Games into Databricks and other line-of-business applications to support data-driven insights and analytics.

After going to market with an RFP, Lotto NZ awarded Adaptiv the integration project.

“Three things about Adaptiv really stood out for me during the RFP process,” says David Gortner, Director of Software Delivery for Lotto NZ. “First, their volume and breadth of experience. Next, how they presented themselves during the RFP process, and last, that they seemed like a partner we could work well with.”

More widely, EDGE also introduced new terminals and ticket checkers in more than 1,100 retail stores to make the game more accessible to customers throughout New Zealand, with replacement of the hardware undertaken across the country in a single ‘big bang’ transformation.

A leading-edge project

The programme of work, known as “EDGE”, required input from both Adaptiv’s Azure and MuleSoft teams. While Lotto NZ’s overall project team was large, they had limited integration resources. With Adaptiv onboard, Lotto NZ benefited from parallel delivery, with Adaptiv’s Azure and MuleSoft teams working concurrently on the EDGE project.

Adaptiv had two roles to play. Primarily, to use MuleSoft to integrate all the front-end customer-facing functions, delivered by Lotto NZ’s web and mobile apps (which enable customers to buy and check their tickets), with Scientific Games’ back end. As Lotto NZ’s internal resources were already allocated, Adaptiv would also integrate the new core platform with over 60 APIs and 14 applications.

The second and smaller component of the project for Adaptiv was to provide an Azure-based integration solution that seamlessly connected Scientific Games to Databricks, Microsoft Dynamics 365 CRM, and Microsoft SharePoint.

All hands on deck

Throughout the 18-month project, Adaptiv, Lotto NZ, and other EDGE technology partners worked closely together despite time zone differences to deliver a successful outcome.

“Every project this size has its challenges, and this was no different,” says Sarah Thirlwall, Lotto NZ’s Chief Transformation and Technology Officer and EDGE Project Director. “90% of the time, the whole programme ran on track, and Adaptiv was one of those partners that worked really well within it.”

Adaptive and adaptable

Both Gortner and Thirlwall value Adaptiv’s flexible working hours and willingness to share expertise and work as part of a unified team.

“We could rely on Adaptiv to bring to the table what they’d promised,” says Gortner. “Everything went smoothly and was delivered promptly. Our relationship with them has been great – smooth and productive – and that’s why we’re continuing to work with them on the next part of the project. They’re a key partner for us.”

Thirlwall agrees. “It’s been a good partnership, one which made our jobs easier. When we needed conversations, they were at the right level, very clear and succinct, and we’d move forward.”

“Adaptiv is proactive and solution-oriented,” agrees Gortner, “and their technical leads were excellent. They’re very flexible, which was important when coming into the project early. We needed to pivot at times, and it was never a problem for them. Both our relationship and technical solutions ended up working well – and they gave us a solution that performs well.”

Go-live, great going

The project started in November 2023 and went live on 25 September 2025.

When it came to go-live, Thirlwall and Gortner were (rightfully) both confident that all would go well. Lotto NZ’s rigorous 6-month UAT of the integrations meant that go-live was a non-issue.

“On the back of the EDGE programme,” says Gortner, “we decided that Adaptiv should also be our formal support partner for integration issues. Additionally, we’ll be leaning on them to help achieve the outcomes we have planned for Azure, including building out our own capabilities.”

With the programme now live, customers can take advantage of enhanced capabilities enabled by the integration of MuleSoft, Scientific Games, and other back-end systems. The integration ensured that existing features continued to function well and can now be enhanced as part of the next project.

And thanks to Azure, Lotto NZ has significantly improved analytical capabilities, with the business data collected and generated by Scientific Games now automatically channelled directly into Databricks.

What’s next?

“EDGE” and the upcoming “Frontier” are at the heart of Lotto NZ’s 2029 vision of “boldly transforming” its customer experience.

Thirlwall and Gortner say that this next phase (Frontier) will further improve the customer journey by delivering new technology and features and replacing its current web and mobile app platforms.

And naturally, Adaptiv will once again be on the front line delivering Lotto NZ the same seamless integration and great teamwork that helped make EDGE so successful.
