PGG Wrightson and Adaptiv: Sowing Integration, Reaping Efficiency

With over 170 years of working alongside New Zealand’s agricultural, pastoral, and horticultural industries to service on-farm needs, PGG Wrightson (PGW) is a name to be trusted.

With over 1,800 employees, more than 35,000 product lines, 89 retail stores, Onto Farm and a strong e-commerce presence (offering everything from horticultural equipment to livestock auctions), as well as 35 dedicated real estate offices, PGW operates a complex and comprehensive business that interacts with a vast range of suppliers and customers.

PGW’s business units include Rural Supplies, Fruitfed Supplies, Livestock, Wool, Real Estate, and Water. The company is listed on the main board of the New Zealand Stock Exchange (NZSX: PGW).

Adapting to the Challenge of Scale

Given PGW’s size and complexity, the decision to replace its legacy ERP with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations presented numerous challenges, especially as it required integration with business-critical systems the company relied on.

PGW invited Adaptiv, a trusted data, and integration partner, to participate in the formal selection process alongside several other similar vendors. Adaptiv was awarded the project and began work with PGW in January of 2023.

Juggling Multiple Moving Parts

The integration project involved connecting Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations to 17 systems, including mail house for statement processing and a web portal for customer transactions.

Alongside integration, Adaptiv also applied its data expertise to ensure PGW could move large volumes of information efficiently and securely. After reviewing the original designs, Adaptiv recommended pivoting from Logic Apps to Azure Data Factory (ADF) for high-volume data transfers. PGW accepted this approach, and around half of the planned integrations were redesigned and built using Azure Data Factory, enabling scalable and reliable exchanges with business partners and line-of-business systems.

This included orchestrating more than a million current and historical invoices through ADF, processed via Azure Synapse, demonstrating the scale and robustness of the solution.

Adaptiv consistently demonstrated a high level of commitment, providing guidance on managing the complexities of working with multiple vendors. Their expertise ensured integrations were delivered, even when challenges arose.  Additionally, they recommended effective solutions to address volume-related issues in the original integration design.

Where to From Here?

The integration aspect of the project took almost two and a half years from initial conversations to completion and involved multiple Adaptiv team members.

Over this time, Adaptiv’s integration and data processes were highlighted as key strengths.
